Small Things Big Impacts

It has always been interesting to me which of my childhood memories have stuck with me over the years. As a child I used to wonder why my Mom would always use the “good” dishes for every day dinner. None of my friends did it that way they saved the “good” dishes for special occasions only. One day I asked my mom why she did it differently. She explained to me that she felt that everyday is a special occasion with her family. I still remember how that made me feel and it made me feel really important. My Mother always had unique ways of making us feel special through her actions not just her words.

I started thinking deeper into what she meant. I realized that she was honoring her family. She was honoring me, her child. She trusted me with the fine china and crystal glasses. I am blessed with a Mother who can cook the most amazing meals. She treated all family dinners as special occasions and I always looked forward to dinner with my family when we all got to catch up. I no longer live close to home and family dinners are one of the things that I miss the most.

Now that I am a wife I want to honor my husband, my friends and family in the same way. I don’t have a second set of dishes or glasses. Most of our good dishes have been passed down through our family and other items were gifts from our wedding. We use our nice crystal more frequently. I know using crystal everyday sounds risky. What if it breaks? Well, I would rather replace something I use everyday that has good memories attached. I like seeing our nice things in use. After all, I don’t want to look back on my life and say “I should have used my nice dishes and glasses more.” Plus, when I bring out the crystal champagne bucket during parties with our friends everyone is usually impressed. That also makes me feel warm and cozy inside. I feel hygge and happy. I want my friends to understand that I appreciate them. I would not be where I am today without them.

I recommend that everyone brings up their good dishes, dust them off and use them. Start adding more memories to those beautiful serving dishes. One of my other favorite things to do for dinner is set an inviting table. A nice table is welcoming and pulls people in. So upgrade your family dinner today!

Cheers Everyone!

  1. This is such a nice and nostalgic kind of post. It is amazing that your mom made your family feel special everyday! I remember when we bought new clothes, we had to wait to wear them for an event or something, I didn’t quite like that, so now, when I buy new clothes, I wear them right away! Everyday is special! ๐Ÿ™‚
